MSDN article
Schemas are containers of objects. The easiest way to understand them is to make a parallel with the programming languages namespaces (C#,C++,etc).
For an LIS, the tables can be grouped in schemas: Routine, Archive, Journal, Accounting.
To create a schema, use the statement:
Create schema Stage1
SQL Server allows one to create a more complex ‘create schema’ statement, but it is not advisable to use this feature, as errors could arise (see the comment on the MSDN article referred in this post).
To assign an existing table to a schema, use the statement:
alter schema Stage1 transfer Patient
If you want to drop a schema, use
drop schema Stage1
However, you must manually transfer all objects from the schema to another schema before being allowed to do so.
